Fight Night

I needed some fresh air and took Jaleo on walk to enjoy the evening. Before we were about to pass a neighbor's kid walking his dog, I told him Jaleo was friendly and asked if his dog was. He answered yes. Bang. Right as we passed, the psychotic dog lunged for us and got Jaleo good on the nose and a few nips to his sides and legs. I kept calm and got the dogs apart while telling Jaleo that he was okay.

Once back I took stock of the pups war wounds and found a good sized, deep gash on his nose. A little Bactine and some Neosporin will hopefully hold the thing together. It's stopped bleeding and Jaleo is now enjoying some treats. He's also licking his ankle a bit but I can't find any broken skin. I think that he may have gotten a good bruising there as well.

Special hugs for the good ol' boy tonight.

Separate Church & Hate

I'm getting tired of right-winged, Christian conservatives standing behind their religion to be prejudiced against any person not like them. Recently, a very, very Catholic friend of mine (well, ex-friend now) commented on how dark the restaurant was that we had just left. My thought was that the lighting was just fine. Later that evening my date mentioned that comment and I suddenly realized that that comment was about the ratio of white to non-white patrons. Woo, I never expected this to be an issue today – especially from a well-educated,successfull business woman in the nations capital.

The next time I saw my friend, I asked to her to clarify her statement and she proceeded to lecture my about how there are too many lazy, welfare-stealing African-Americans in this town – all the while using the "N" word. Yes, the "N" word. I was so shocked I could barely breath. But, I did catch my breath long enough to give her a few choice words of my own.

And today, I read a story in the Lexington Herald about a student at the University of the Cumberlands getting kicked out because he was gay. This is a religious university – hopefully, not receiving any funds from any government entity. Again, how Christ-like is intolerance?

Yesterday, I ran into a neighbor coming back from the immigration reform protest on the National Mall (see the Washington Post article) wearing the following t-shirt:

She found it on Cafepress at this link. I thought it was so perfect I ordered one for myself. It simply says "I believe in the separation of church and hate." I'm going to wear it to the dog park were one of the church going Baptists said how horrible it was that a Latino family was moving into her upscale Arlington, Virginia neighborhood. Oh, my!
